Body positivity

You are here:

Mary Cornell and Violet Fox started working on a proposal for a new Body positivity LCSH in January 2023. Fat-acceptance movement is a current LCSH under the broader term Social movements.

If we were starting from scratch, we would propose a new heading for Body positivity under the broader term Self-acceptance. We would then make Fat acceptance a narrower term under Body positivity. But I’m not so sure it makes sense to propose both Body positivity and Body positivity movement. (There are precedents, though: for example, both Animal rights movement and Animal rights are current LCSH.)

Working with what we have now, one approach might be to propose a new heading for Body positivity movement like this:

BT   Social movements
new term    Body positivity movement
NT   Fat-acceptance movement

The MARC records would look like this:

New heading:
150 __  |a Body positivity movement
550 __ |w g |a Social movements
550 __ |a Self-acceptance
670 __ |a  The self-love revolution : radical body positivity for girls of color, 2020
670 __ |a A body to love : cultivate community, body positivity, and self-love in the age of social media, 2021

Revised heading:
150 __ |a Fat-acceptance movement
450 __ |a Fat activism (Social movement)
450 __ |a Fat liberation (Social movement)
450 __ |a Fat power movement
450 __ |a Size acceptance (Social movement)
550 __ |w g |a Social movements
550 __ |w g |a Body positivity movement

Happy for feedback on whether it makes sense to create a new heading just for Body positivity movement, or if it would be smarter to create two headings at this point: Body positivity and Body positivity movement. (Are there any books out there that are reflective of Body positivity but not the Body positivity movement?)

  1. Hi Mary and Violet, I think you will find that the concept of “body positivity” is present in picture books without necessarily being linked to a concrete body positivity movement. Examples would include “Beautifully Me” by Nabela Noor and Nabi H. Ali and “Bodies are Cool” by Tyler Feder.
